ECZ Dilemma: How Did Last Minute Independent Candidates Make It
The new constitution has certainly come with its own challenges. Last minute independent candidates are not permitted to switch, but a few have cross and been successful. How it did it happen?
How does the Electoral Commission of Zambia reconcile the new law and the independents who stood today like Nangoma’s Boyd Hamusonde?
Article 51 paragraph
(a) provides, a person is eligible for election as an independent candidate for a national assembly seat if the person –
(a) is not a member of a political party and has not been a member of a political party for AT LEAST TWO MONTHS IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE DATE OF THE ELECTION.
Is the assumption that these people have to resign now hence won’t be members by the time it’s 11th August?
