SIXTEEN rugby teams are expected to compete for the David A.R Phiri (DARP) rugby tournament slated for this weekend from September 24 and 25, at Lusaka Rugby Club in the show grounds.
Lusaka Rugby Club chairman Duncan Mfula confirmed this yesterday at the Lusaka challenge Rugby Tournament Media briefing.
“The event would feature the best rugby teams in Zambia, having representation from all the top teams’ appearances from Livingstone and Solwezi among others,” he said.
Mfula named the competing teams as Diggers, Red Arrows, Eagles, Nkwazi, Kitwe Playing Fields, Buffaloes, Mufulira , Lusaka Power House, Chibuluma, Roan, Prisons, Konkola, Gymnkana, Kansanshi , Livingstone and Props Rugby Clubs.
He said that the event would also attract women and youth teams such as OYDC, Eagles, Lusaka RFC, Diggers, Eagles and Red Arrows from Lusaka and Copperbelt Provinces.
Mfula said the winners of the main cup would walk away with K 12,500 while the runners-up would earn K 6,500.
He further said the third and fourth positions would pocket K 3,500 and K 2,000 respectively while in the Kapasa Bwalya plate; plate winners would pocket K 2,000 with runner’s up getting K 1,000 respectively.
And bowl winners would walk away with K 1,500 and the Shield Winners would also walk away with K 1,000 while the players of the tournament would walk away with K 1,000.
“The DARP Lusaka challenge would run over two days with all 16 teams contesting the group games on Saturday on Round-robin basis and the knock out games which would be played on Sunday.
With all the confirmed teams , 31 games would be played on Saturday , made up of 24 from the main event and youth and women games.
Mfula said 22 games would be played on Sunday including the finals of the youths and women’s games
