Lusaka businessman Fisho Mwale is emerging as favourite to win the executive mayoral race on August 11.
Fisho, a former Lusaka mayor, is seemingly the city’s favourite going by his credentials when he served in that office over 10 years ago. He is running as an independent.
The multi-talented politician has upped his campaign visiting townships, bus stations, markets and entertainment spots to familiarise himself with residents.
Zambia enacted a new constitution which provides for the election of an Executive Mayor. The Executive Mayor will serve a five-year term as the President and Members of Parliament.
Fisho’s strongest challenger is expected to come from former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa who is sponsored by the opposition United Party for National Development, UPND.
However, the support Fisho is receiving from MMD and majority PF members gives him an edge. Ruling party officials say their candidate is weak and may not stand the formidable Maureen Mwanawasa
