THE House of Chiefs has advised opposition political parties to avoid being desperate for the Republican presidency.
Chairperson Chief Madzimawe said politicians should not fight over leadership positions, but carry out their campaigns peacefully and allow people to make their choices.
He said in an interview in Lusaka, at the weekend, that leadership came from God, and that politicians should not shed blood over public offices.
“I am advising those in the opposition not to be so desperate for power to the extent of trying to force their way into the position of Republican president,” Chief Madzimawe said.
He also advised opposition politicians, members of the civil society and some clergymen who wanted to venture into politics to intensify their campaigns, instead of resorting to violence and inciting people to rise against the Government.
The traditional leader said those in the opposition and others who wanted to venture into politics should wait for the people’s choice in the 2011 elections.
Chief Madzimawe said Zambia had always been a peaceful country and it would be sad for few individuals to seek to set it ablaze because of their selfish ambitions.
He advised clergymen to desist from being partisan and instead provide guidance to those in Government.
