Zambia grappling with water management challenges-konga

Government says the country is currently grappling with a lot of water demand management challenges which are hampering poverty reduction and quality service provision to Zambians across the country.
Speaking this morning when he officially launched the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Water Demand Management (WDM) programme in Lusaka, Energy and Water Development Minister, Kenneth Konga called for the need for every stakeholder to play their role in reducing the wasteful use of water and ensure that there is efficiency demand management in the country.
Mr. Konga says the country is currently experiencing high level water losses of up to an average of 45% and therefore it is crucial that stakeholders come up efficient water use plans in order to attain efficient and equitable distribution of water and in turn reduce poverty.
He notes that there enormous potential to improve the state of water service provision through the development of a common regional understanding and vision on water demand management.
And speaking earlier, Water and Sanitation Association of Zambia Chairman and National Water and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) Board member, Levi Zulu observed that water demand is a regional problem which will require collective efforts to address.
