The Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) in Eastern Province has pleaded with the government to quickly announce the maize floor price to avoid exploitation of farmers by the private sector.

But Agriculture Minister, Michael Katambo has told parliament YESTERDAY that it is the mandate of the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to set its maize price and not government, adding that the agency will announce its price once the maize moisture content is between 12 and 12.5%.

CSPR Eastern Province Coordinator, Maxson Nkhoma tells QTV News that the delay in announcing the price is causing anxiety among farmers.

Mr. Nkhoma says the concerns of the farmers are genuine because the government through the FRA has taken unnecessary time to announce the price at which it will be buying the maize from the farmers.
